Supplies
>> Food and
water bowls
Separate bowls are needed for food and water. They should be stable
since a Maine Coon like to scrabble when drinking.
There are several materials, we prefere metal and ceramics since
some cats are sensitive to the dye in plastic.
>> Litter box
There are many variants in different materials plastic most common.
There are two main variants open or closed. Choosing
a closed it is important to empty/pluck it on a daily basis since
ammoniac otherwise stays, this is unpleasant to the cat and
it might choose to go somewhere else. The literature says that every
cat should have its own box but we have four sharing one
without problem so you will have to try things out.
>> Litterfiller
There are many variants and brands. One alternative is to choose
a variant that do not form clumps, then you empty the whole
box regularly another is use one that clumps around moisture. Then
you pluck the results on a daily basis and refill when needed.
We have tried both alternatives and are most satisfied with one that
form clumps, All Naturals “Simplicity plus”, we think it is
easy to use and very economical.
>> Transport box
A necessity since you can not transport a cat loose in a car or
any other mean of transportation due to the risk of causing an
accident both in the traffic and otherwise in the form of spew from
a travel sick cat. There are several types both soft and hard.
>> Playthings
The kitten needs stimuli there are a lot to choose from but
favourites are furred mice, kitty teasers, laser pointers and ping
pong balls.
>> Grooming
equipment
Comb and brush to the coat, claw cutter and shampoo for bathing.
>> Play tree
If having the opportunity a play tree is a good alternative
since it combines a toy, sleeping place and scratching post. They
come in every size. Not having this alternative the minimum
requirements are a sleeping box and a small scratching post, there
are many models. The scratching post function both as a claw
sharpener and as a marker of territory since the cat has sweat
glands under its paws for this purpose.
